What you’ll be doing...

The GN&T Network Security team has an opening for an Associate Director in the Core and Edge Applications Defense team. In this role, you will be expected to lead highly technical engineers responsible for the security lifecycle and effectiveness of all 4G and 5G wireless core network functions. You will be accountable for the network security score for your respective network functions and will work across organizations and with network vendors to improve the security hygiene by implementing the Network Security Fundamentals (Access Management, Situational Awareness, Configuration Hardening, Vulnerability Mitigation). A successful candidate will possess strong leadership, collaboration, and technical skills. They will be expected to define objectives, set priorities, align resources, brief executive teams, improve the security of the networks, and inspire future leaders while reducing cyber risk.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading a team of network security engineers owning the network security score and lifecycle of all wireless 4G and 5G core network functions.

  • Discovering and identifying all network functions (models, versions, etc) to quickly assess the impact of vulnerabilities and identify End-of-Life/End-of-Support hardware/software.

  • Developing a baseline of normal operations and implementing threat detections to alert of any deviations to proactively identify potential cyber threats.

  • Manage and develop incident response protocols to quickly identify, contain, and resolve network security incidents and threats.

  • Implement and operationalize metrics, scorecards, and tracking to understand the current state of cybersecurity across the Network Security Fundamentals - Access Management, Situational Awareness, Configuration Hardening, and Vulnerability Mitigation.

  • Instill ownership and accountability for security-based metrics and drive increased maturity, visibility, and subject-matter expertise.

  • Ensuring that the security controls planned for the Networks are operating effectively with the broadest coverage and prioritize by risk.

  • Ensuring the team is working on the right things, and saying “no” to things that detract from the mission.

  • Championing a highly collaborative work model with an aptitude of building and maintaining relationships across different teams at multiple levels, internally and externally.

  • Establishing a high standard of team performance objectives and supporting career development and progression within the organization.

  • Ensuring compliance with Verizon and department objectives and financial priorities.



What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Eight or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science or related discipline.
  • Three or more years of technical leadership experience in Security, IT or Networking. Experience developing and delivering network, application or security solutions.
  • Proven leadership skills and business acumen within a large organization.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of networking and network security. Experience building relationships with business leaders across networking and security teams as well as other business units.


Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Strong networking and cybersecurity knowledge and experience.
  • Established track record in managing complex processes, driving results, and adapting to change.
  • Demonstrated success leading organizations providing cybersecurity engineering.
  • The ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and educate peers and teams on security concepts and overall importance to the business.
  • Recent experience with machine learning, statistical analysis, graph theory or artificial intelligence.
  • Hands-on experience working with internet-scale data sets such as Netflow, BGP, DNS, and IDS logs.
  • Knowledge of network-based, system-level, and application layer attacks and mitigation methods.

Where you’ll be working

In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and a minimum eight assigned office days per month that will be set by your manager.
