Job Description:
The Photonics team is expanding! We’re helping NASA create high-definition video communications for the Space Station, and to also explore asteroids 250 million miles away. Responsibilities:
- Lead the system testing effort for programs that develop new photonic technology and custom hardware for free-space optical communications, laser transmitters for remote sensing, RF photonics, and other applications.
- Create comprehensive test procedures at the systems and subsystems levels and prepare detailed test reports.
- Specify and coordinate the development of software tools for instrument control, data collection and data analysis.
- Apply engineering principles to design, modify, or develop test stands, equipment, and test processes for specific programs.
- Conduct and/or coordinate off-site testing as needed at specialized test facilities, including radiation, shock and vibration, EMI/EMC.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of 10 years of related experience.
- Experience with one of more of the following: fiber optics, fiber lasers, high-power bulk lasers, optical communications, free-space optical communications, nonlinear optics, ultrafast lasers, spectroscopy, and integrated photonics.
- Familiarity with optical system testing equipment, including laser sources, OSA, power meter, PER meter.
- Working knowledge of optical fiber splicing processes and equipment, including arc fusion splicers, cleavers, and re-coaters.
- Ability to develop automation software for instrument control and data collection/data analysis using LabVIEW/Python/MATLAB .
- Well-developed organization skills, including the ability to handle many details and multiple programs simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Motivated, team-oriented individual with strong problem-solving abilities
- Willingness to travel: Up to 20-30% domestic travel
- Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a clearance
Desired:
- Master’s degree or PhD in in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficient use of lab automation software (Python preferred)

The proposed salary range for this position is:
$78,700 - $165,300
