In this role, you will have the opportunity to shape technical content and help define the content strategy and information architecture for Qualcomm.  Reporting to a senior director for technical communication, you’ll work with others on the content strategy and quality team, as well as with technical writers, customer engineers, and product managers.

As senior technical editor, you will advocate for our developers’ needs through the consistency and coherence of our technical communication. You will help normalize content style and voice, ensure navigation clarity and content task objectives, develop templates, and help define ideal assistance strategies for our products.

Your guidance will help improve the overall usefulness of our technical communication efforts, and you’ll also help define and deliver new developer content experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of senior technical communication strategists, architects, and taxonomists to define the guidance and templates for high-quality documentation and online content for developers.
  • Educate writers with developmental editing, content strategy, information architecture, and train new writers on Qualcomm style and processes.
  • Organize, maintain, and evangelize technical style and our voice.
  • Consult on documentation maintenance projects, terminology / taxonomy and branding decisions.
  • Consult and work on developer relations issues and communication, including helping to build new content experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Communications, English, or related field and 6+ years of experience writing and editing software and/or hardware documentation and content, or related work experience.
OR
Associate's degree and 8+ years of writing and editing software and/or hardware documentation and content, or related work experience.
OR
High School diploma or equivalent and 10+ years of writing and editing software and/or hardware documentation and content, or related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent practical experience (6 years+)
  • Experienced developmental editor, with familiarity in content strategy principles, roles, and goals
  • Ability to write/edit samples and help develop a Qualcomm voice for high-quality technical docs
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple style demands and deliver best practices and guidelines, including guidelines on global English and translation
  • Experience with content management and authoring tools, including HTML or markdown and quality-checking tools (such as Acrolinx).
  • Excellent communication and team skills, ability to drive consensus, support multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

•    Creates and manages clear, accurate, and concise technical content by leveraging advanced knowledge of technical writing principles, resources, tools and various Qualcomm processes, products, and technologies. 
•    Leads team to edit, update, and review multiple types of complex content based on in-depth understanding of reusable content and project requirements to meet high-level and large-scale content goals and customer needs.
•    Identifies complex technical gaps and errors in a set of product content and makes suggestions for improvement to stakeholders. Reviews technical content, identifies changes, and flags to team; provides feedback to other technical writers. 
•    Gathers, analyzes, and leverages customer feedback to identify and recommend corrective actions that enhance document quality and customer usability.
•    Formats, publishes, and organizes technical content in a pre-defined structure or template to ensure document standardization, and to meet overall Qualcomm quality standards; coaches junior writers to do the same.
•    Helps team to incorporate and adapt to new tools, processes, and standards to increase efficiency and/or automate, keep up with industry standards and trends (e.g., online information delivery), increase content quality, and enhance document searchability. 
•    Encourages team to develop and present technical content in an innovative way to increase customer usability; implements best solution. Pilots and trains team to incorporate innovative ideas/processes.          
•    Collaborates with individuals inside and outside of own function (e.g., Engineering, Business) to ensure technical content changes are integrated with other components of a specific project.
•    Manages team project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables for small to mid-sized projects.
•    Re-scopes projects, identifies resources, delegates work, and reviews the work of team members in order to address changing timelines or priorities.

Level of Responsibility: 

•    Works independently with little supervision.
•    Provides supervision to direct reports.
•    Decisions are moderate in nature. Errors are detected and corrected with relatively minor financial impact or effect on projects, operations, or customer relationships. May require involvement beyond immediate work group to correct. 
•    Requires verbal and written communication skills to convey information that may be somewhat complex to others who may have limited knowledge of the subject in question. Role may require basic negotiation and influence, cooperation, tact, and diplomacy, etc. 
•    Has a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to make key decisions).
•    Most tasks require multiple steps which can be performed in various orders; some planning and prioritization must occur to complete the tasks effectively; mistakes may result in some rework.
•    Substantial creativity is needed to innovate new processes, procedures, or work products within guidelines or to achieve established objectives.
•    Deductive and inductive problem solving is required; multiple approaches may be taken/necessary to solve the problem; often information is missing or incomplete; intermediate data analysis/interpretation skills may be required.
•    Incumbent's input may be solicited during strategic planning period.

Pay range and Other Compensation & Benefits:

$50.00 - $75.00

The above pay scale reflects the broad, minimum to maximum, pay scale for this job code for the location for which it has been posted.
