About this Role

The Directional Drilling Operator position involves an operator working with a locator to install conduit and cable underground using horizontal directional drilling equipment and locating devices. The Operator may also install handholes, flowerpots, pedestals, row signs, and cable as required. Other duties, responsibilities, and qualifications may be required and/or assigned.

This position requires field work, which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, off-hours, and working in inclement weather.

What You'll Do

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for operating the drill head during drilling
  • Potholing
  • Operate various digging equipment, assist the driller with the operation of the drill
  • Install handholes, flowerpots, and other OSP devices
  • Accurately complete progress forms, project activity reports, and all other documentation
  • Safely work in streets and alleys as well as other work conditions, including manholes, ditches, and other excavations
  • Operate crew vehicles, drilling equipment, vacation equipment, various equipment, conduit trailers, backhoe/mini-excavator, core drilling equipment, and other tools and equipment normally used in horizontal directional drilling activities.
  • Familiar with proper safety equipment and instruct new trainees in the proper use of the equipment and installation per the design.
  • Follows OSHA and company safety regulations and precautions

What You'll Bring

Job Requirements

  • Prior HDD Operator experience
  • Prior drill crew experience preferred
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling, boring, and/or locating.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to hand tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License Required
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
  • Position requires a minimum of 40% travel, with the potential for additional travel as needed based on project demands.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work from heights.
  • Able to lift 60 lbs unassisted.
  • Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

Skills Requirements:

  • Possess critical thinking skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate with others.
  • Ability to communicate in writing.
