About this Role

The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating digger derricks and specialized equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of distribution lines. This role ensures that all equipment is operated safely and efficiently to support crews in completing projects on time and within specifications. The Equipment Operator works closely with foremen, linemen, and other team members, often in challenging outdoor environments.

What You'll Do

Job Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as digger derricks, backhoes, and excavators to support distribution projects.
• Safely maneuver machinery for the installation and maintenance of poles, towers, transformers, and underground utilities.
• Inspect and maintain equipment to ensure proper functionality and safety compliance.
• Operate line trucks and trailers to safely haul poles and equipment to the job site.
• Communicate with crew members and supervisors to coordinate equipment operations with project needs.
• Adhere to all safety standards and environmental regulations, including OSHA and company-specific safety protocols.
• Complete daily equipment logs and reports to track usage, maintenance needs, and operational issues.
• Perform basic troubleshooting and repairs on equipment as needed.

What You'll Bring

Job Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• May be required to relocate as work requirements demand.
• Light crane certification may be required for boom trucks, etc.
• Drives and operates conveyance machinery equipped with tools and materials to job site.
• May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
• May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training.
• All individuals in this personnel classification must meet requirements of OSHA standard 29 CFT 1910 for the specific operated equipment.
• Walking and working across uneven terrain.
• Valid Driver's License and a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Physical Requirements:

• Work from heights.
• Able to lift 60 lbs unassisted.
• Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.

Skills Requirements:

• Possess critical thinking skills.
• Able to effectively communicate with others.
• Ability to communicate in writing.
