Job Description:

What You’ll Get to Do:

Paralegal will work in the USAO, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Civil Division- Philadelphia. On a regular or recurring basis, will conduct the following tasks:

  • Serve as a paralegal responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in a wide variety of technical paralegal services, including the kinds of Case that the Civil Division handles.
  • These include cases where the United States or its federal agencies are sued.
  • Primary areas of practice are tort cases, including medical malpractice and Constitutional tort cases, and discrimination cases alleging discrimination in hiring and employment practices by federal agencies. These cases also include Affirmative Civil Enforcement ('ACE') actions to enforce a wide variety of federal statutes and agency regulations such as the False Claims Act, Controlled Substances Act, and civil rights laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The work requires a sound working knowledge of the legal system, document management and review, and legal research.
  • The contractor will work in an office setting; some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of small office items is required.

Perform paralegal services including, but not limited to the following:

  • Provide a variety of direct paralegal services
  • Seek and locate sources of information, in aid of civil litigation, investigations, and trials, including through contact or correspondence with other departments and/or agencies of federal, state, and local government.
  • Gather factual material independently; read, annotate, and summarize discovery, files, and other factual aspects of the case; obtain financial and statistical information, agency records, court records and other public records; review and analyze documents and draft memoranda.
  • Perform specialized detailed legal research as necessary. Draft documents for filing in court.
  • Upload electronic documents and data onto document review platforms and organize folders for review. Participate in review and analysis of electronic documents.
  • Redact documents and transcripts for discovery, including using electronic redaction.
  • Responsible for organizing and processing large quantities of data and discovery documents, including electronic discovery. Responsible for completeness of discovery productions and for producing discovery.
  • Prepare numerous exhibits for trial.
  • Provide litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations. Utilize various software applications.
  • Work closely with other members of case team, including assigned AUSAs, legal assistants, case agents and office Litigation Support staff.

More About the Role:

  • Works under the direction of Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor.
  • Performs the following tasks while complying with established procedures: compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs and other legal documents; summarizes depositions and other transcripts; maintains case files; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks and controls document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery); indexes, tracks and exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial.
  • Prepares exhibit cross-references.
  • Assists attorneys in courtroom.
  • Reviews documents for relevance and privilege according to established performing quality control on the work of peers in all of these areas.
  • Prepares documents for image scanning; performs other document collection related activities, including document screening, and labeling of files to be scanned.
  • Performs simple database searches.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Requires paralegal certificate, JD, or currently attending 

    an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study. One year of legal training or legal experience or at least two years of college education may be substituted for the paralegal certificate.

  • Additionally, at least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required; trial experience very helpful. 
  • Automated litigation support experience valued.
  • Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
  • DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US citizenship required)

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Trial experience very helpful. 
  • Automated litigation support experience valued.
  • Extensive computer and database expertise (MS Excel and Word skills necessary).
