Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy’s Power Generation Division is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced engineering manager for the Wind Controls and SCADA within their Engineering and Operations Support Services (EOSS) organization. This engineering manager will report directly to the Director of the wind engineering organization. This role will apply diversified knowledge of power generation, industrial automation, networking, and SCADA/DCS to lead a talented and diverse team of engineers and technical experts that execute a broad variety of assignments supporting renewable power generation. The ideal candidate will independently lead a diverse technical team to design, develop, and implement creative controls solutions to optimize wind farm and turbine operations while ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of our power generation assets.

Job Overview

Employees in this position are responsible for maintaining overall SCADA availability and performance, industrial automation and control of wind sites and turbines, equipment health and performance, and operational data flow for NextEra renewable generation assets. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of engineers, technical experts, and field response; providing guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure high performance, efficient operations, and professional growth
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the engineering and SME team
  • Design and develop advanced automation solutions for wind farm and turbine operations including selection of appropriate control system hardware and software as well as maintaining detailed documentation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including, but not limited to, engineering, operations, finance, and IT
  • Provide ongoing support and maintenance for all installed and operational controls assets
  • Continuously monitor and analyze the performance of automation systems to identify areas for improvement, implementing upgrades and modifications to enhance system efficiency and reliability
  • Ensure all automation solutions comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, cybersecurity standards, and corporate policies
  • Identify systemic issues within the fleet and work with OEMs (e.g. GE Vernova, Siemens-Gamesa, Vestas, etc.) to conduct RCAs to identify and then implement corrective actions
  • Provides expert information to internal and external clients on complex issues and progress on the wind controls strategies
  • Promote a strong safety culture and adhere to all safety guidelines and practices
  • Completes assignments given in broad terms concerning general objectives and limitations
  • Displays strong communication and interpersonal skills in a fast-paced operational environment, with some aspects of research and development
  • Performs other job duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in controls engineering or a related field
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a team effectively
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with power generation equipment and control
  • Proficiency in PLC programming, SCADA systems, and HMI development
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as TCP/IP, Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850
  • Experience with project management and budgeting
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

Desired Qualifications:

  • Masters in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License
  • Six sigma black belt certified
  • Five year’s related experience in the renewable energy generation industry
  • Two years leadership/supervisory experience
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
