Job Description:

The Opportunity:

Provide a variety of direct paralegal services to assist AUSAs, including but not limited to the following:

  • Seek information and locating new sources of information in aid of ACE investigations and litigation through contacts or correspondence with law enforcement as well as officials from other governmental agencies, witnesses, and counsel.
  • Independently gather factual material.
  • Read, annotating, and summarizing transcripts, files, and other aspects of the case file.
  • Prepare case-summary binders.
  • Obtain financial and statistical information.
  • Obtain agency, court, and other public records.
  • Analyze documents, and drafting court filings and memoranda for AUSA review.
  • Have working knowledge of, and experience with, federal and state court systems, civil litigation, civil discovery, legal research procedures and resources, and financial fraud investigations.
  • Organize and manage a substantial quantity of records (often hundreds of thousands of pages of electronically stored evidence per case), documents, data, and discovery.
  • Conduct financial analyses and related investigations of individuals and organizations to determine their ability to satisfy a judgment or settlement.
  • Prepare subpoenas and reviewing, organizing, and summarizing large productions in response to such subpoenas.
  • Review a wide variety of documents via various platforms (including using e-discovery tools).
  • Prepare attorneys for, and assist with, trials and depositions.
  • Review case related materials, analyze and summarize health care billing and treatment records for attorney use.
  • Prepare discovery demands and organize, review, and analyze discovery responses.
  • Prepare preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda, documents, and correspondence for AUSA review and signature.
  • Provide automated litigation support to attorneys in trial preparation, depositions, and courtroom presentations. Utilize various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters. Prepare documents, charts, and visual materials for use in trials.
  • Provide technical support (e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits).
  • Perform moderately complex legal research using various legal (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER) and law-enforcement (e.g., CLEAR and Accurint) tools.
  • Create and manipulate Excel spreadsheets.
  • Be proficient in a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and Adobe).
  • Hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary, relating to cases, special projects and/or for training

Responsibilities:

  • Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal or a Project Supervisor.  Work products are reviewed prior to submission; however, often develops these products with minimal direct supervision other than written guidelines. 
  • In addition to functions performed by Paralegals, described below, performs moderately complex legal research; synopsizes transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use; reviews case related materials and, for example, identifies potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation; writes preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda and correspondence. 
  • Contact mostly with other Contractor staff, but occasional contact with trial staff may be required.

Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study, or an equivalent level of legal training or experience; or an equivalent level of education may be substituted.
  • Additionally at least two years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required. 
  • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support. 
  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources. 
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. 
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems. 
  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources. 
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important. 
  • DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required).
